Almost Fall?!

August 29th, 2010

Guess who this is?  I don’t even know which Veggie Tales it was…but we saw one recently where Larry the cucumber wears a bag on his head!?  Anyway, Bekah saw an empty grocery bag, and wanted to give it a try.

Poor girl…I think she was really bored.  Kay is always reading, always has her face stuck in a book.  Bekah has started to read a lot…but doesn’t have the attention span to get through a whole book.  The fact that she can read is pretty amazing, because Emily and I spent ZERO time teaching her!  haha…Kay has been coaching her.  Good job Kay!  Kay reads, Noah is always playing with trains and cars.  A lot of time, Bekah finds herself wandering around, looking for things to do.

Carole has been in KC for a few weeks, and came over to spend a night with us.  She took the girls out for a walk on our nature trail…

…which leads to a park…

…and then capped the evening off with a Bible story before bed time.  Let me just say, that by the time she left, our kids were TOTAL fans of Auntie Carole.

The weather has suddenly turned…really nice!  Not the freezing cold of winter.  Not the over saturated pollen air of spring.  Not the melting humidity of summer.  It’s actually been really nice out.  What a welcome change.  So…today being Saturday, we swung by the Oriental Super Market and picked up some fresh made Korean style sushi…Calpico…

…sushi…

…at the park!  The three of them started off playing together.

Then they slowly started going their separate ways.

Noah continued with his random exploration of the same jungle gym.

Bekah struggled to get past the 3rd monkey bar.

Kay left the entire play area and began picking flowers.

Great weather.  So what’s the current drawback?  Bugs.  Tons of them.  Loud ones…chirping and buzzing so loud, sometimes it’s hard to hear myself think!  Biting ones, we all have itchy bites on our arms and legs.  But this takes the cake for grossest bug experience thus far.  I was edging the lawn with my weed wacker…and out emerged this HUGE spider.  I’m talking huge, and disgusting.  Wolf Spiders can get up to 1.5 inches big…that’s their body!  So when we are talking about their legs and everything, they can easily span upwards of 4 inches.  4 inches!  Anyway, edging, and then there is this huge Wolf Spider, grey, trailing this blue sac.  What is that!?  Turns out…they carry their own egg sac!  Eeewww.  I see road kill and dead animals all along the road.  Doesn’t bother me in the least.  But this spider, with this huge sac…had me unglued.  Disgusting.

FYI…this picture isn’t one that I actually took.  I found this off a google image search.  I was too busy…weed wacking the spider!

Neighborhood Block Party

August 9th, 2010

The HEAT has been unbearable.  I thought LA got hot.  I thought Las Vegas/Palm Springs can get hot.  But here…hot AND humid…it’s disgusting to go outside.  I think today was something like 97 degrees?, but with the humidity, the heat index was up at 107-109 degrees!  Walking outside feels like walking into a steam room or sauna…yeah, not a good feeling.

In spite of the heat, yesterday was our annual Neighborhood Block Party.  BBQ, neighbors, tons of kids, and games…some good old fashioned fun in the midwest.

There were different age groups of kids that got to compete in games.  Everyone got a prize.

Noah had to play ‘musical chairs’ and ‘dress up race’.  I’ve never seen ‘dress up race’, but he had to run to one side of the field, put on an adult sized hat, scarf, and single boot…then run back as fast as he could.  Both games…NOT A CLUE.  He had NO idea what people were telling him to do!  But, in all fairness, none of the other 2 year old kids new how to play either.  The silver lining?…Noah had his eye on a little ambulance toy on the prize table.  He got it!

Bekah’s age group, which included Jesse, had to run a leaking cup over to fill up an empty bucket.

Next game, grab the sock off your ‘opponents’ pants.

This went a little better than the 2 year old games, but not much.  They ended up just running in a circle…for a really long time, no one pulling any socks.

Kay, Juli, and Luke’s group had to pop each otherss balloons, without getting popped themselves.

But the BEST game of all…was a new one that I’d never seen before.  They called it, ‘Poop in the sack’, the first one to take a dump in the sack wins!  Just kidding…it was the favorite sack hop race.

July 29th, 2010

WAIT!  What’s this?!

Kansas City, MO - Top 10 Cities for young adults!  Haha!

It may not have the big-city buzz of a Chicago or Houston, but KCMO is on its way up. The “Paris of the Plains” is in the midst of a $9 billion downtown development project, which will create a swath of new condos, apartments, offices, bars and restaurants- many of them targeted to young professionals. Unemployment and cost of living are low here as well, and job prospects are promising. Six Fortune 1000 companies call Kansas City home.

ONE Year In Kansas City

July 28th, 2010

TODAY marks our one year ‘anniversary’ of living in Kansas City.  Exactly one year ago…we boarded a ONE WAY Southwest flight, from LAX to MCI.  Mitch picked us up from the airport, and we crashed at the Yap’s place until our apartment was ready.  A day or 2 later our cars arrived.  A couple days after that, we got the keys to our temporary apartment.  A couple days after that, and ALL of our STUFF arrived…we moved into our apartment, and became official Missouri residents.

Can you believe it?!  ONE year! Is that crazy? Lee’s Summit has been “home” for a whole year! And what a year it has been!…IHOP internship, (non)volunteering at the Daniel Academy, the IHOP Student Awakening, the futile search for good boba, moving into our new home, snow and now hot/humid, shoveling the snow and now mowing the lawn, friends and family visiting…what a blur it has all been!

In spite of the blur, I do feel God has highlighted ONE thing in particular this first year here in KC, and it isn’t what I would have expected. That’s not totally true…taking a step back, it seems obvious now, that I should have expected it…

Anyway, I would have thought year ONE would have been about learning about prayer and intercession. I mean…this is IHOP, the International House of Prayer! I thought I’d get to see the inner workings of how a community devotes itself to be a 24×7 house of prayer until the return of Jesus. Everything from the cost structure, to the practical mechanics, theory and theology, casting of vision, sustaining of vision, intercession and prayer techniques. And I did get to see a ton of that, very up close and personal. The internship and special project with IHOP was an overwhelming experience, one that I will continue to reap blessings from, years from now. But at the end of Year ONE…I don’t think that was God’s main thing for me.

About four months ago, I was doing my internship prayer hours at an awakening meeting, and God began to speak to me. I could feel the Holy Spirit speaking to me…and I felt this responsibility to pray and intercede, as a father, husband, and head of the household. Not just the ‘responsibility’ to pray, but I also felt the ‘authority’ to intercede. It was like my roles were somehow key to releasing the blessing, favor, and purposes of God into our family. So that evening, there in the middle of worship, I interceded for all of our family needs: money, job, next steps…all of that good stuff.

Little did I know…but my actual work of intercession started much before this evening. A couple of months before this, I found myself praying, a very simple prayer, telling God that I love him. “Jesus, I love you. ” I didn’t hear a message about this, or get any special revelation about this…I just began to do it? At first, I actually didn’t even realize I was doing it! But when I did, I found myself praying that prayer all the time, everywhere, before meals, driving in the car, with the kids before they slept, in the shower, before falling asleep…everywhere! “Jesus, I love you. I love you, Jesus.”

Recently, there have been a couple of experiences in worship, where I’ve felt the full attention of God. I’ve experienced some really incredible things here at IHOP: waves of Glory, waves of Joy, overwhelming exaltation of Jesus…but there have been 2, maybe 3 occasions, where I have felt this powerful ‘attention’ of God thing. It’s hard to explain, but it really felt like I had ALL of God’s attention, his full, focused…attention. And wow is that a crazy experience, to feel the ‘undivided’ attention of the KING of all kings!

There is a passage in Song of Songs, where it talks about how the bride has caught the bridegrooms heart, whole heart, utterly ravished…with just one look of her eyes. We know this is an allegory for us, the church/bride, and Jesus/bridegroom. That we as the bride, have caught the heart of Jesus, with just one look of our eyes. Sounds great, but it is actually really hard to sort out. When we, as the bride, come to God…we think we need to pray, humble ourselves, repent, do all these things before we even have a chance of capturing his heart. But the truth and reality is this: that for some reason, maybe because of his passion for us…somehow, with just one LOOK…we get Him, ALL of Him.

I experienced these ‘attention’ times…where my “I love You, Jesus” resulted in this revelation that I had his whole heart, his whole attention, all of his passions. I remember at those times, feeling…I got you, God. I have you, all of you. With these simple words, the affections of my weak heart, and just one look of my eyes…I have all of you.

Did you know that Jehovah Jireh means ‘The Lord who Provides’ AND ‘ The Lord who Sees’? It’s the same name, same title…because when He sees, it is his nature to provide. So here it is…the heart of my Year ONE lesson…I found that my intercession, was actually to get The Lord who Sees and Provides to see me, to just look my way…and therefore provide for me. My feeble prayers, the simple words, “Jesus, I love you.”…that was my work of intercession. With one look of my eyes, I could get him to look my way, and see where I was…and the one who sees, is the one who provides.

Intercession is bringing our needs before God, standing in the gap, asking, knocking, seeking. But before that…maybe ‘above’ that, intercession is telling the King that we love him, and love him dearly. Intercession is using our place, our position in his heart, to get him to look our way…and see, and provide.

When God looks at us from Heaven, I wonder what he sees? Lots of sad stuff…but also lots of good stuff. He sees justice, Christians trying to do the right thing. Spreading the Gospel. Helping the poor. Reaching the Nations. Healing the sick. Begging for mercy, forestalling judgment. We live in a dark world, but because of God, there is so much light. But I’m thinking, the one thing, that blazes through all of the darkness and all of the light. Is the person, or church, that is saying and singing, “I Love You, Jesus.” It’s the bride that captures his heart, with one look of her eyes.

This is especially applicable now…because here we are, a whole year later, having experienced so much of God providing, leading, guiding…but still needing so much more of him. Today, marks one year in Kansas City. But it also marks the month that we completely and utterly run out of runway. No money. No job. No leads! Sometimes valiant faith, sometimes none at all. But I do have a name and a promise. A name of my God…the LORD who sees, the LORD who provides. And a promise, that I can ravish his heart, with just one look of my eyes.

OK!…last thing…this song really captures a lot of what I’m trying to say.  You have ravished my heart, with one glance of your eyes; How fair is your love, my promised, my bride.

Yes Sir! Gardening. Blow Up Pool.

July 14th, 2010

After watching Toy Story I, II, and III…Noah has been really into his bucket of green toy soldiers.  (me too actually!  see how I have artillery on the left, flanked and covered by 2 separate fire teams, with both a sniper and spotter on the right?)  Sorry…got carried away.  Anyway, I hope he’s having as much fun as I am…

One of the good byproducts of this toy soldier thing is a “sometimes new found quick obedience”…captured in a simple, “Yes sir!”  Now Noah sometimes answers us with a quick and curt, “Yes sir!”  Noah…clean up your trains.  Noah…sit down in your chair.  Noah…finish your food.  “Yes sir!”

The other day we saw some really fragrant bushes and pretty flowers at the Home Depot.  They were on a super sale, so we picked up a few bushes for less than $5 a piece!  Bekah has been REALLY into the gardening thing with me…and is always the first one out whenever I’m watering or gardening.  Here is Noah, tagging along with his little shovel.

Fragrant Jasmine!…my dad has tons of these bushes in his front yard, and they smell so good.

Purple flowers…can’t remember their name.

It’s been right under 100 degrees here these last couple of days.  High 90’s AND humid!  It’s totally gross being outside.  We found this cool blow up pool at costco, and decided to go for it.

A Weekend In St. Louis

July 14th, 2010

That’s the famous St. Louis Gateway Arch…also known as The Gateway to the West, an iconic monument built to remember and celebrate America’s expansion into the West.  We had to drive 4 hours east to get here, not a bad drive considering all the driving we’ve recently been doing.  We always wanted to visit St. Louis…but never really got around to it.  Until now.  What brings us out to here?  A job interview, of all things.  The CEO of the company said he’d pay me $150 for my troubles if I could come out and meet with him.  Why not!?…so we burned our remaining hotel points and made it a family road trip.  I didn’t even have to re-pack snacks for the road!…they were still packed into our picnic basket from the last road trip.

First stop?  Of course…the family favorite, Old Spaghetti Factory.  This was the cleanest one we’ve ever been to, I thought they should have called it the “New Spaghetti Factory”!

St. Loius, Missouri was actually really beautiful.  Green, hilly, lots of rivers and lakes.  Even the drive out was pleasant, compared to the incredible boringness of our drive through Kansas.  Here we are at the edge of Forest Park…a HUGE park in the middle of St. Louis.  I thought to myself, wow…this is almost as big as Central Park in NYC, nah…nothing is as big as that!  Turns out…it’s even bigger!

It started to get REALLY hot outside.  We had planned to take the kids on a riverboat ride, but the banks of the Mississippi were flooded!  Instead, we took them to a children museum called, The Magic House.  The kids had such a great time.

Noah…mesmerized by the fan keeping the balls in the air.

Static electricity.

Pretend shopping.

Pretend maternity ward.

Pretend bank.  Bekah said she was writing a check to the Exodus for offereing!

Pretend mailbox.  Noah said he was mailing a letter to A-Ma and Lina.

Pretend garbage collection and recycling.

Noah inside a huge bubble!

For dinner, we visited a microbrewery and bottling company for root beer!  The root beer is not in the picture…but it was really good.

That was our quick weekend in St. Louis.

Oh…and the job interview?  Not what I expected.  Still looking…

Our First Independence Day In The Midwest

July 5th, 2010

Our first Independence Day in the Midwest.  The plan was to play with water balloons and squirt guns, BBQ, then when the sun goes down, light up some fireworks.

Controlled and organized water balloon games…

…quickly degenerated into an all out water balloon war…

…which turned into a chaotic squirt gun battle…

…until they found a common target…me.  Here I am, trying to evade Samuel’s lightsaber!

Glad to hear Rebekah got all of my attackers back for me.

Jesse, caught in the act of squirting.

We got a bunch of sparklers and ONE single cone.  So this was OUR MAIN EVENT, the lighting of the cone.  You can see in the background, there were TONS of other “main events”…but this was ours!

Noah, and his first sparkler experience.

Happy Independence Day!!!

July 4th, 2010

Aware of Noah’s fascination with trains, Timmy and Benny got Noah a train-shaped sandwich cutter.  Here is our first go at a ham and cheese train shaped sandwich.

For the past couple of years, the kids have been saving up for a piano.  Every time they get New Year’s or Birthday money, they stash a portion of it away to go towards “the piano” fund.  We have enough for a decent keyboard now…but can’t decide, keyboard now, or piano later?  Rebekah couldn’t wait…and so did what she could with a box, a stool, and a toy.  Pretty resourceful!  Not seen here…Bekah also set up a bunch of chairs for us to listen to her recital!

What are the kids lounging around outside for?

to watch fireworks!  EVERY single evening, for the past 4 or 5 days?…our neighborhood has sounded like a war zone.  I had no idea July 4th would be this BIG of a deal!  They have temporary fireworks stores set up in parking lots everywhere, like they do in some parts of LA.  But over here, they aren’t those little shacks…these are huge tents that you enter, pick up a basket, and browse through the aisles and various sections!  It’s supposed to be NUTS tonight…but we’ll see how the weather (weather forecast says scattered thunder storms) treats us.  Either way, we have a classic hamburger/hot dog BBQ planned with the Yap’s and Young’s.  Happy Independence Day!!!

KC to LA - Day 1

May 31st, 2010

So begins our longest road trip ever.  From Kansas City to Los Angeles, via Oklahoma City, Albuquerque, Flagstaff, and Las Vegas…much of it on the historic Route 66!  The night before, Lillian and Wendy came by and dropped off snacks, candy, fresh baked cookies, toys, and a little ice chest.  They also spent time praying for our trip.  You guys are SO thoughtful.  Thank you so much, neighbors!

Mile 0.  Kansas City, Missouri.

Bye home!  John gets the whole house to himself.  We finally got our landscaping done…and it is one of John’s TOP priorities to water the shrubs and tress EVERY day, as they need time to set and grow.

As we left Lee’s Summit, I prayed over our car and family.

Me:  God, please grant us a safe journey.  Keep us safe, and help us have a great time as a family.

Bekah:  Daddy, what’s a ‘journey’?

Me:  A journey?  A journey…is an ADVENTURE!

Wow…be careful what you pray for!  An adventure it was!  About halfway to Wichita, deep into Kansas, it started to get dark and heavy with clouds.  It started to sprinkle.  Then it started to rain.  Then it started to pour.  Then it flat out started to just dump on us.  Then hail…like huge 1/2 inch chunks of ice started smacking into our windshield.  Gusts of wind started making the rain go almost horizontal, pushing us into the next lane.  And then a truly frightening thing happened…the sky turned all GREEN!?

I had heard from multiple people…that a green sky means a tornado is imminent, that you have an 80% chance of a tornado touching down…so run for cover!

And run people did.  Every overpass we went under, cars were bunched up, huddling together, seeking shelter.  We drove in the rain, hail, gusts of wind, and green sky for about 5 or 6 overpasses before Emily and I thought…hunh…we better take cover ourselves!

There was about 20 cars taking shelter with us.  Here is a pic of some of the chunks of hail.

Emily text the Exodus for prayer…we had no idea what else to do.  The kids were getting scared because the rain and hail was SO LOUD (except for Bekah, who kept asking me to just turn the DVD louder).  It finally let up, no tornado.  I googled the green sky=tornado thing…some people swear by it, scientist say there is no direct correlation.  Some say its the hail that refracts the light, some say its finer moisture that changes the color.  Whatever the case…tornadoes or not, green sky does mean extremely severe weather.  Pretty crazy stuff for the first 2 hours of our drive!  I couldn’t capture the green hue of the sky with my camera…but it was really green.

Anyway…we made it to Mile 184.  Wichita, Kansas.

A Super Target to stretch out our legs.

Boba Zone…I was amazed to find a Boba Tea place out here.  But did NOT have the guts to try it.  Been disappointed too many times.  Besides, we’ll be in lands flowing with tea and boba in just a couple of days!

Off to Oklahoma City!

I was so glad to reach Oklahoma City, I forgot to take a picture of my odometer.  I think we are somewhere near Mile 350?

We checked in…and found out they ran out of cribs.  So we asked for a room with a sofa or something for Noah to sleep on.  They ended up giving us the largest room in the hotel, 2 queen beds and a queen sofa pullout!  AND…the front desk guy offered to extend swimming hours for us, and privately opened the indoor pool to us after hours!  The kids had a total blast.  Thanks God!!!

Bekah wanted to test out the sofa pullout with Noah…so Kay gets a queen size all to herself.

Next stop…Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Top 10 Underrated Cities

May 23rd, 2010

Who would have thought?  Kansas City?!

America’s Top 10 Underrated Cities - Yahoo Travel

Kansas City

With downtown’s multi-billion dollar face-lift, pedestrian-friendly boulevards, and claim to having the most fountains of any city outside of Rome, Kansas City is definitely deserving of buzz. Plus, history buffs can learn about the underrated city’s pioneer roots at the Arabia Steamboat Museum, while sports fans can visit the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, a tribute to the excellent athletes forced to play in segregated leagues. Blues and jazz clubs also abound in this city where musicians like Count Basie and Charlie Parker got their start, particularly in the historic 18th and Vine District, where the American Jazz Museum is located. For some summertime family fun, head to mega-water park Schlitterbahn Vacation Village, which debuted in July 2009 as the brand’s first venture outside of Texas. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, you’re also in for a treat, as this Midwestern city also boasts some of the country’s best barbecue.

What!?  No mention of IHOP?! :-)

Along with:  Providence, Portland, Baltimore, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Louisville, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, and Sacramento.
